They warn you about this. The other mothers. The ones who have older children. Especially the ones who have grandchildren now. They warn that if you blink, the little babe you held wrapped up in a blanket the day they were born, will soon be a young boy and then soon a young man.
I must have blinked. I tried not to.
I remember tracing the small lines and creases on your fingers when you were days old. I remember breathing in your sweet milk breath and the baby scent in your hair during the long hours of the night.
You amazed me as you grew so much and started talking, crawling and then walking.
Your giggle still melts my heart and eases my frazzled moods on the tougher days.
You are kind, you are caring. You are intelligent beyond your years. You are compassionate, generous, loyal and funny.
You have been my shadow from the moment you were born. My bright, sunshiny, brilliant companion.
This year you will start full-time school and more of this world will get to see what I have been able to treasure, almost to myself, these last few years.
I hope for you to stay true to who you are. Change only if it is because you are growing. You never need to change for anybody else.
So I blinked and here you are my young boy.
May you enjoy school as much as I enjoy you.
Have you got a child starting school soon?
Do you remember when yours started school?
What emotions did you feel?
